Mental Health – Its Driving Me Crazy!

I’m getting sick..I’m getting well..I’m getting sick.. I  feel better, but then again my therapist says I’m in ” denial

I’m now broke too. I think I am depressed.  Maybe not, it could be the fact that my mother died recently and I am just feeling down.  Its hopeless for me. I am so confused.  I need to call my therapist. What the heck is ” indecisive disorder?”

I feel like dying . ..What does she mean “ Baker Act?” …

And so it goes with many people who are not educated on the business of mental health. If you have ever been to a  ” quick lube ” or ” jiffy lube” for an oil change, you may have experienced the hated peek into the waiting room, when the technician tells you that he found some other major problems with your car.

Good news he says, we can fix it right here. That will be 79.95$ please. When we think about healthcare in general we need to have the same caution we do in those type situations. No matter whether your general practitioner, your dentist, or in this case we are talling mental health.

    ITS A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM

On this particular page I chose to emphasize the area of Mental Health.  However America’s healthcare in general is operating in the same way. We pay and reward providers of all  types of care lots of  “extra”  cash for extending services, stacking services on patient”s plan of care which simply do not apply and are not needed.  Does this mean that each member of the care giving community is purposely defrauding patients an payers? Of course not .

Its the product of a monster that we created. No accountability and the total reliance on one provider to dictate what will be need to care for any given purpose. If you compared the healthcare system in Canada to America (they have something like 3x the success rate that we do) and identify what is so different , the first thing to stand out is the careful process with which they go through before officially labeling/diagnosing anyone with anything.

If I remember correctly,  before a diagnoses from one doctor for  a serious condition can be made in any of the branches of healthcare, an outside and independent doctor must confirm the diagnoses without any compensation from the first provider.. It seems like common sense and it clearly works.

There are many honest and well meaning doctors, therapists and professionals in each of the branches of healthcare. However the amount of providers who utilize and take advantage of the  ” pay to fail” or ” keep them sick ” model for financial gain -is significant enough that it has a great impact on the general population and is only getting more ridiculous.

My hope is that this brief overview using Mental Health as the example , we can stir up enough concern and interest on the subject to research it and move towards making a change. Its not just the money wasted, that’s actually the lowest on the list of problems. It is the damaging effect that ANY diagnoses from any health care professional can have on people in any arm of health care.

Over the years in this blog I have shared my personal and professional experiences in each area of healthcare. I have posted 500+ articles on 35 categories all falling under these umbrellas. We are educating, but also attempting to initiate change by meeting with people like the payers or insurance companies spending million annually for no reason. I have done numerous interviews on radio and other media just to help move this problem into a solution mode.

There are many buzz words going around these days about what is “normal” for my child to be doing or how they should be acting at their age. Sadly, people will often watch a popular talk show, and come to the conclusion that their child has a certain disorder…or a friend who just read a good article forwards it to you in an attempt to help diagnose your child with some disorder. I have even heard people discussing what they think their child “is” as they scan magazines in the lines at grocery stores….

How do you find a way to really know if this new obsession with diagnoses for children  (and medications) even applies to you and your situation? You likely wont get any opposition 1 child psychiatrists, as their primary role is to identify a disorder and treat it. Their primary challenge is to find what the child could meet criteria for according to the DSM -V.

dsm cash cow

In case you were unaware, that book the DSM, or Diagnostical and Statistical Manual that all psychiatrists use to find a diagnoses for their patient, contains ZERO statistics. After all  every single  ” disorder ” listed in there was totally made up. No evidence, no data, all theory. In a nutshell, 200 or so psychiatrists or so gather together anonymously every 4-5 years and toss their new ideas for ” disorders” in the hat and vote. Enough votes,  and it is in the next version. Sure there is a little more to it but not much.

Somehow and by an amazing coincidence -the major drug companies felt a need for a new drug to treat just such the type of disorders the doctors approved and as the group of doctors make the trek down the mountain from their secret meeting place, the drug makers offer up some samples for a new  ” designer” drug made for that purpose. Now that is just something you cannot learn in a textbook.

The doctor writes for it and suddenly finds himself being rewarded for using that drug! Another “disorder”  is born, and new medication on the market.

The problem is that even smart people like doctors can make up only so many new ” disorders ” It has now gotten to the point that the latest DSM reads like most people’s life at one time or another. So, are we all nuts? Or are we maybe just too gullible?

Even the names of these new ” disorders” are getting more challenging for doctors to make sound clinical. For example I think one recent discovery is something like ” teenage rebellion syndrome”  which is the  “medical” term for teens acting, well, like teenagers. Yeah, so there is that.

By the way, I am aware mental illness is real. There is a need for treatment and in many cases medicine. In many cases however, the root problem and appropriate care for the problem is absolutely unrelated to the recommended treatment plan. Does this really mean that hundreds of thousands of people right now are taking medicine and getting a specific treatment that is useless?

Of Course!

How can this happen so easily? All these  people getting sent to the wrong type doctor and put on medicine that not only wont work, but could hurt the situation even more. How can it be? Let me help you understand.

If you were shopping for a new truck and walked into a Ford dealer, and had a heart to heart with the salesman about just exactly what you need, would you be likely to  get answer A or answer B below.

A- Well Sir and Ma’am, It is your lucky day, we have 3 of the last years models of that truck out back and the boss said this morning at the sales meeting ” Guys – Move those 3 pickups today! At any cost, we need room  for the new models. I bet I can get you in one for 3k below book, if you buy today!

B- Gosh folks, I would love to help you out but my gut tells me you will enjoy a Chevy much more. Let me give you some directions to the closest dealership and pull the model I think you all will like off the internet so they don’t try and take advantage of you.  I sure wish I felt my Ford was best, but I am a Christian man and I cannot sell it to you even if you lay out 30k in cash right here. I hope it all works out.

Now think for a minute. You have your answer? Of course you do. I think any of us would have a heart attack if a salesman said go to the other dealer. Well, when you are choosing between a psychiatrist or psychologist, you are up against the same problem. Because all doctors are rotten lying cheats who don’t care about you? No of course not.

The New Pills Keep Coming- At The Expense of Millions Of American Lives

Kids and adults alike are being labeled with countless disorders and prescribed medicines they do not need. It is disturbing to think that money would drive some doctors to over prescribe medicines, but it happens every single day. Not all doctors are doing this, but enough are.

8385687

Its gotten bad enough that one group of researchers  say that up to 10% of those being treated for addiction to prescription drugs, inpatient and outpatient are physicians themselves.

Cancer, hepatitis, and you name it all healed and gone and he has been at it for 30 years. Oh and his success rate is slightly different then the 30-50% we brag about in treating symptoms. His rate of success by the way is only 98%! And that’s accessory is success and ridding the body of disease. In America we called it  “success” when we successfully relieve symptoms.

Mike makes his services available through Don’t Label My Kid!. If you or someone you know is suffering from a chronic or serious illness  and have not been able to find any treatment and relief , email Mike silverwood08@gmail.com

TJ- What Do I Do?

I’ve had a few questions about whether I am a therapist, counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist? Teacher ? Or what ?? Lol ..In other words, how have I been able to help thousands of people get the treatment they need while steering clear of all the labels and piles of drugs? Am I all those things?

Yes and No. I do counsel and consult.  However my gift and most useful tool is that I can accurately assess whether you need the Ford, or the Chevy. I can assess your child and steer you clear of 10k in wasted doctors fees because many times a simple behavior plan that I write with and for your home, will solve much. No medicine. You see I have the degrees and all, but much more importantly, I have been through major depression, addiction, PTSD . My brother killed himself. I have some real life experience. I have had 40 teen foster kids. Started schools for expelled kids and run day programs for adults with severe behavioral problems. I have 4 of my own too.

You come to me for mental, behavioral, and addictions, and all parenting issues. You read my stuff here. You contact me for a personalized plan of care before you ever darken the doorstep of any mental health provider or psychiatrist -psychologist. Or addictions center.

  1. I am enlightened by your writing. I was a single mom for 11 years working three jobs, got burnt out, depressed and had an ADHD girl. I had to fight the system for the IEP program, what a nightmare….she is so gifted in her age of 23! *If employers would give jobs on our natural born gifts, we’d be a great nation. • Sorry so long. Just saw some comments I missed. I honestly don’t know that I know enough to decide. I never judge candidates by how one or two things work out, but always by motives, or at least what I can see of their motives. Obama claimed everyone could have whatever insurance they wanted and that he would get everyone covered. Truth be told only 20 million people were affected . Yet Obama is still trying to make his ” lie” a legacy…
So Trump-care I don’t know what to think but I expect that in any decisons he will own the outcome. I really am more a judge of character then anything. I know Trump love this country, he is American ( for sure) – He will never give billions of dollars to groups that want to kill us, an that’s a helluva good start..

  2. You make a lot of great points here. The pharmaceutical companies are taking people for all they have, including their lives. It’s sad that they are allowed to get away with it, but the sad truth is that we live in a greedy, money hungry world. I’ve told countless people who are suffering with depression or have children who are, that medication should be their *last* option. That circle of love, as you call it, will come back to bite them. If it doesn’t make matters worse with suicidal thoughts and attempts, there is a great likelihood of it causing a lifelong dependency. For children with ADHD, yes some are out there. But, I tell you what, had these diagnoses been around when I was a child, I think most everyone in my family and most of the people in my school would have been on medications and various therapies. My son is Autistic, so I know without a shadow of a doubt there there are children out there who truly have special needs. At age 17, he struggles to piece sentences together, has great difficulties in spelling and reading, and is just now starting to do basic division in math. So, these kids are definitely out there, but are all of them who have been diagnosed truly on the Autism spectrum? I don’t think so.

  3. Great post, very thought provoking topic! I am NOT a doctor of anything, but I do wonder sometimes about the “circus” on TV. I have seen in the time of a 1 hour show, commercials advertizing drugs “snake oil” to fix this or help that, and then a commercial from a lawyer somewhere advertizing to sue drug companies for bad medicine!
That alone is enough to make one wonder! Also Cancer- My Mother-in-law died from liver cancer last year. From the time she was diagnosed until the day she passed was only 4 Months!
All that BIG $$$$$$ MONEY spent on “cancer research” and they still cant (or don’t want to) come up with a cure. That sure does make it seem like the Cancer research industry is someone’s “gravy train” because if they cured it, all the research money would go away……(?)

What ever happened to the old adage of “an ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure???
All of these awful chemicals that Monsanto and others make that are used in the JUNK food that we must endure
are certainly not good for us!!! I know that a basic vegan diet would be good for us, but that is hard to stay strictly vegan! I have a friend here with a radio show that you would like, at http://www.healthtalkhawaii.com/
It is a Great show, on Saturdays from 8:00 to 9:00 AM, and on the website. Check him out sometime…….

    • First of all thank you for visiting my site! You are already many steps ahead of the general population, in that you at least see the potential for a huge problem and major conflicts of interest in the whole racket. I am sorry about your mother in -law and I am sad to say she is in the majority when it comes to treatment.
Yes there are natural remedies even for cancer. Yes the drug companies do avoid those and pimp their useless cocktails with full knowledge that the likelihood of survival is minimal, and they are not even ashamed to say so publicly.
As I mentioned in my page here, just recently a large drug maker of psychotropic medications came out with a public statement to address accusations of marketing drugs that do not work.
Not only did they acknowledge it, they were so bold as to announce that 12/13 of their anti-depressants for teens have been deemed not only ineffective, but that they actually CAUSE suicidal thoughts.
Well, it gets worse. You would assume they would have stopped marketing them, possibly? Nope, they are all being prescribed today.
So there is good reason that the USA, the most powerful and educated superpower is only one of just two countries in the whole wide world that allows any drug companies to advertise on television. It is not that we don’t have the knowledge of the danger, but we know the truth about alternatives that actually work, mostly natural remedies, that are widely used in many countries and actually cure cancer and many diseases…
So my friend, this whole charade is not due to the lack of knowledge, but as you suspect, it is about money.
The sad part is that this is all very public information, but nobody takes the time to do the homework. We really are a country of followers, or ” sheeple” as I call them.
As far as the radio/media – I have done many shows and am talking to book publishers now to try and get the word out.
If you think your friend would take an interest in this topic, I would appreciate it if you forward my link to him, and tell him to contact me tjpetri16@gmail.com and I will provide whatever he needs and if he would like do what I usually do and be a guest via telephone on a show about this topic.
Thanks again, and please do share my link with any and all media outlets as this is how this site has gotten where we are today..by the blogging family sharing and networking…
      God bless you –

  6. Thanks for telling it like it is without demonizing. It’s a complex problem that won’t be solved by black and white indictments aimed in any one or two directions. I am personally grateful that medications are available, which they would NOT be if there were no profit in developing them, but none of us can deny that that there are a great many problems with the current state of diagnosis and treatment in America – for **A LOT** of reasons beyond Big Pharma capitalism.

Health insurance agencies favor medication-based treatment options and will cover them for some diagnoses and not others, so that creates a whole new level of over/mis-diagnosis & treatment potential.

Differential diagnosis skills aren’t terrific out there in the mental health community (in my extensive experience) – and the DSM-5 isn’t helping much with that! (_Saving Normal_ by Allen Francis, M.D. takes that on credibly – Ginger Campbell’s Brain Science Podcast hosted an excellent interview/discussion with him that’s worth locating, if you aren’t already a follower of that podcast)

“Education by drug rep” is becoming more common as doctor time gets squeezed even tighter – so “flavor of the moment” dx’s have increased and prescriptions are often written out of a bizarre form of [unconscious] confirmation bias — i.e., you see what you look for.

Everyone with a keyboard seems to ring in with an online opinion, and only a few have ever read any of the original study publications before opining. Fewer still know HOW to read (or evaluate) those studies – so many parrot somebody else’s opinion, who is repeating something they saw or heard from someone else – often a dubious source presenting opinion as expertise (frequently based on a limited sampling — often just the experience of one individual, sometimes not even from personal experience) – and so it goes.

It seems we now have a viral version of the old game of telephone making it difficult for people sincerely interested in educating themselves and taking charge of their own health to figure out fact from fiction.

If I were forced to point my own finger in only ONE direction that needs to change, it would be to stop allowing medication ads on TV – as you point out well above. Not bloody likely, as the Brits say.

I could go on for pages – and so could you, no doubt – but I’ll stop before my comment becomes longer than your post – lol. Thanks for your recent “follow” – which I am returning – so I’m sure we’ll exchange comments quite a bit in the future as we explore what each of us has written. We have overlapping interests.

  7. You’ve put down in writing what I’ve thought and said for years. As a cancer survivor, I am now beginning to believe that there are natural alternatives to chemotherapy, but of course, drug companies and their minions will lose millions, if not billions if these avenues were explored.

Thank you for a very enlightening read. Nice to meet you.

    • After reading a little about your story, I am reminded of so many other thousands ( including myself) who have , in an effort to bury their past wounds, actually dug a pit too deep to climb out of. I actually am incorporating that whole point into a few initiatives I am working on. I am looking for a partner to spread the word on this and so many other issues, such as the fact that God already healed us. He paid the price, took the beating and all we should have to. Our job is to learn to walk in that healing, not to wait for it…: ) anyhow hmu anytime if you want to discuss more about what I am doing! tjpetri16@gmail.com and thanks for the sweet words.. tj

I’m wanting to get my book published and start speaking but I’m not sure of how to find audiences that would benefit from my story. Sure there’s lots of people on similar paths, and lots that could benefit, but I’m not sure how to find groups of these people to speak to. I want to help others get past the hurt and walk in the healing that you’re talking about. I’d love to hear you’re thoughts. My email is: juliaincuracao@gmail.com

  9. Oh wow, YES!! I have bi-polar, and just last year read Wheat Belly, and Leaky Gut Syndrome books. AMAZED at the difference in my mental health, and emotional stability!!
Too many kids on meds- as a teacher I saw it all the time. Kids are crazy acting because we took recess, and naps out of schools!! Brain based research proves kids need activity, and rest. So WHY are most schools cutting it out??? So big pharma can make more money shoving pills down our throats.
THANK YOU!! Keep telling the truth! Everyone needs to hear it!
And thank you for following me too!

  10. Hi. First of all, thanks for sharing. When I started my M.A in clinical counseling we were using the DSM-IV. The next semester we were required to buy the updated revision, the DSM-5. One of my professors said that it is pharmaceutical companies who pay for the publication of this manual and they dictaminate the criteria and requirements for every mental disorder. Every time the manual is updated some requirements are remove so more people can meet criteria to be diagnosed and medicated.

Also, something I noticed during my internship (I worked mostly with teenagers) is that it were parents the ones who should be in therapy instead of teenagers. There were many cognitive and behavioral issues that are not necessary diagnosable according to the DSM.

I agree with your post, mental diagnosis are excessively estimated. Unfortunately, parents would believe whatever the therapist says, as they would do with a regular doctor.

    Blessings

  11. I have found that each specialist sees their patient/ client through the lens of their particular training. When my son was completely decimated by anxiety almost 4 months ago, I knew I had a choice of how to help him. I already know from a meds trial for ADHD medicines, that his body is extremely sensitive to the side effects from “head meds,” and that if I took him to a child psychiatrist (6 mo. wait list in my area), they would have prescribed medicine and had him go to therapy. The pediatrician would have followed the same path. I chose the route of an intuitive naturopath and energy healing. So far, with change of diet, adding vitamins and one supplement to help his brain, I have my son back about 85% with some occasional anxiety still. He is still getting better and will continue to do so. In his case, the health of his blood sugar and gut were directly impacting his mental status. For me, these days I rely heavily on energy healing and intuition (and people with very strong intuitive gifts and healing gifts). They have served me well.

    • Good for you! You are leap years ahead of most. Taking the high road as you’ve done is well worth it. You are very right that clinicians generally treat by he way they were trained to, regardless of if it what might best. Thanks for the comment, many parents could benefit from reading your story.

  12. The ugliest truth about for profit medicine is that there is no profit in healing the patient…despite the so-called ‘wellness’ programs our HMO’s are so fond of promoting. But those programs don’t promote wellness; the promote the idea that if you get sick it’s your fault for not behaving ‘well’ enough. Thank you for this post.

Basically he said the blood around our brain is being boiled by mobile phone use. He said it, it’s now happening. Just in my house 2 of us have a brain illness…

Wish I could find that video…Guy was spot on with his warning
