Almost daily I see or hear something that if you think it through- makes no sense. Now admittedly-  part of that is because I am an analyzer. I am always listening to what I say and also for what others say to see if it actually makes sense. I  think what got me in this whole hobby was back a few years ago when some comedians were big on the term ” oxymoron”.

Since then I am  more aware of words that I and others speak. Anyways this particular sign about the baby ” not on board” actually has a story with it.  About 20 years ago in Florida there was a sheriff we had who was extremely successful at nailing high level drug traffickers who used the I-95 corridor to run their wares back and forth to and from Miami and the surrounding areas.

It was uncanny how he and his deputies were arresting  5x  as many drug runners as any other agency north or south of his jurisdiction on the interstate. His guys were literally stopping people and asking them to pop the trunk sometimes and finding dozens of keys of cocaine, or millions of dollars in cash stacked up. After several years of this some of the arrested men began to file lawsuits against the department, claiming that they were all stopped as a result of “profiling” by the deputies.

The claim was this-the group of 5 or so people who did not know each other before this said that the sheriff had stopped them unlawfully as they were not speeding or had not broken any laws. The claim was two fold. First, that they were all black men between 23-30. Second they all had ” baby on board ” signs in their rear windows.

                                                  They won.

For a certain period of time the judge ruled that something like 50 cases must be dismissed due to what they called ” profiling “.  The drug dealers were not given their drugs back, but they were released immediately, given a formal apology  by the court and then allowed to march right into the police station evidence department and take their drug money back.

It was drug money because the dogs had sniffed the scent of drugs at the stop. So racial/sign profiling was banned. The signs obviously were put in the windows to give police the impression that a nice young couple may be driving along with their newborn . Now this was back in the gap, when thsoe signs has just became popular.

How this relates to mental health, I am not sure other then people thought it was CRAZY!  So that is my justification for posting it here..

Anyhow I thought it was interesting the far reaching grasp little things like a window sign have. The sign on this post, just shows us the flip side and begs the question -did the first one even make any sense to put out? Would any of us slow down due to a  ” baby on board ” sign-or speed up for a  ” no baby on board ” sign?
